Gurukulam system of education in ancient times

Gurukuls have existed since ancient times. Gurukula system of education is an ancient Indian system of education. Under this system, the students themselves have to come to the guru's ashram or residence and study. Gurukulam means that the teacher should join the family and impart knowledge. Its main purpose is to serve the Guru during the course of learning and earn his favor and gain mastery in all the disciplines..

A tradition of sages or sages is called Gurukulam. Another name for Gurukula is Guru Peeth or Vidya Peeth. There is no fee for education for students in Gurukulam. Service to the Guru, Guru Bhakti is considered as a fee. Once only Brahmins and Kshatriyas were allowed in these Gurukuls, no one else was allowed in those days. They used to run with the blessings of kings and their protection. The Gurukulas used to live in a peaceful environment on the banks of the rivers, away from the settlements. Vidyarthi means in Gurukul

The teacher should personally examine those who want to acquire education and decide whether they are suitable for the wealth of knowledge as a student or not. This means that education is not a right but an honor for the talented. A student in these Gurukuls is required to observe absolute celibacy till the completion of his education (usually 20 to 25 years). A student completes his education at no cost in these Gurukuls.

In these Gurukuls, students and Gurus must attend the various programs held in the temples in the morning and evening. Attendance in this way inculcates qualities like discipline, cleanliness, social responsibility etc. In this system, the secular way of life and the spiritual way of life are not separated. The main purpose of Gurukulam is to teach life as a lesson and education as life.
